Challenges in Mixed Methods Research

Convenor:
Dr Elizabeth Halcomb, University of Western Sydney
Dr Sharon Andrew, University of Western Sydney
School of Nursing

Synopsis:

Mixed methods are increasingly recognised as an innovative approach to research in many disciplines. Conducting mixed methods research creates numerous challenges for both the novice and experienced researcher. Whilst mixed methods studies are increasingly reported in the literature, these papers often focus on the study findings and have limited detail regarding the research process. However, the complexity of mixed methods designs requires a detailed understanding of practical issues in applying a mixed methods approach. Scholarly discourse about these issues is essential to promote high quality mixed methods research and foster development of the skills and creativity of researchers working within this paradigm. This stream will seek to provide a forum for showcasing some of the practical issues relating to the application of mixed methods research. Some of these issues might include, but are not limited to:

  • Achieving Integration
  • Data Analysis
  • Collaboration
  • Research Training
  • Study Design
  • Peer Review: YES
